My research addresses how nature persists, adapts, and can be better protected in landscapes shaped by people — cities, urbanizing wildlands, and islands alike. It spans several connected threads:
- Light Pollution — how artificial light at night affects wildlife behavior, physiology, and ecosystems, and how lighting can be designed to reduce harm.
- Historical Ecology — reconstructing the landscapes cities have paved over, to better inform current management and restoration.
- Spatial Ecology — GIS-based species distribution and habitat modeling, with a particular focus on the California Channel Islands.
- Insect Conservation — recovery, monitoring, and captive rearing for endangered butterflies and other insects.
- Bioresource Management — managing urban nature, from wildlife and the urban forest to human-wildlife conflict.
